When Delta Green was reprinted back in 2006 we ran into a number of problems, not the least of which being that there were two screw-ups in the layout that didn’t appear in the PDF previews we’d proofed it from. Under the Majestic-12 section the description of an entire MJ department (MJ-9) was missing along with some notes on the department head. Later, in the Scenario “The New Age,” a sentence describing the operation of Mi-go weapons was left out while another was duplicated in it’s place. Well, we’ve finally got an errata sheet for that stuff and it’s downloadable from out site right HERE.
If any of you fellas know of any more errors please send them in via email and we’ll update the errata sheet both for Delta Green and for any of our other products.

In order to keep your attention riveted on us here at Pagan Publishing, I’m posting five sets of preview pages from our upcoming Classic Call of Cthulhu scenario antholog Bumps in the Night. Now, be warned: these pages will show you what our new layout looks like, and will reveal some of the art, but most importantly there are spoilers in these pages. If you don’t want spoilers, DONT download these pages. And if you do download them, don’t come whining to me that there were spoilers! Now, I will admit that one of these scenario previews contains misleading spoilers. So if your players do read these previews and act on the information they find, they will screw themselves. I leave it to those cheaters out there to find the land mine on their own.

As I’ve said before, all these scenarios were written by John H. Crowe III of Walker in the Waste and Realm of Shadows fame. All the scenarios are non-Cthulhu Mythos supernatural horrors. The cover is by Rick Sardinha. You can check out more of his artwork at www.battleduck.com. Interior art is by Heather Hudson, Samuel Araya and an artist new to Pagan, Rhonda Libbey.

So here are two pages from “The Westerfield Incident“, a monster hunt in the mountains of upstate New York. Guess what? All the stuff you thought was going to work? It won’t.

And here is a preview of “The Vengeful Dead.” Title pretty much says it all. Get ready for some really angry walking corpses with a mission.

“Bitter Venom of the Gods” has got a damsel in distress, and evil cult, but not a Great Old One anywhere in sight. Don’t worry. You won’t miss them.

“The Curse of the Screaming Skull” is a good old fashioned ghost story… sort of.

“An Unsettled Mind” is another ghost story that turns extremely bloody extremely fast.

I thought I would take the time to bring everyone up to speed on what’s happening with Pagan Publishing in 2009. Here are the projects that we have in the queue for 2009.

Bumps in the Night: collection of five new scenarios by John H. Crowe III. These scenarios break the mold in that the horrors players face are not drawn from the Cthulhu Mythos of H.P. Lovecraft. These terrors are drawn from folklore and mythology. Inside you will find vengeful revenants, hungry undead, Sumerian Demon-worshiping cults, malevolent mummies, and poltergeists haunting the body of a crippled girl. We expect it to come in at 192 pp softcover PAG1014 $29.95.

Delta Green: Countdown, Pagan Publishing’s Origins award winning supplement for the Delta Green line of Call of Cthulhu supplements will be reprinted this summer for the first time since 2001. The only difference between this edition and previous editions is that the fold out map of Club Apocalypse will be removed because it has been reprinted in Delta Green: Eyes Only. We anticipate keeping the price at $44.95.

Mysteries of the Old West: This is our next big project. Mysteries of the Old West is a sourcebook for playing Call of Cthulhu adventures on the American Frontier during the days of the Wild West. Six-guns and Shoggoths! In the next week we will begin fishing around for folks to contribute artwork and layout skills. We anticipate the price will be at least $39.95 Look for it around Halloween at the earliest.

The Unspeakable Oath: It is time for Pagan to dust off the Unspeakable Oath and get it back on track for a regular publication schedule. We’ve got enough material socked away for a couple of issues. Our intention is to keep the price below $10.00 and the page count around 32. Look for the first issue at GenCon 2009.

Delta Green: Targets of Opportunity will be published by Pagan Publishing and Arc Dream Publishing as a limited edition hardback. The print run will be sold by Arc Dream through pre-orders and direct mail order. Chaosium will also have a large number of the book (per our license agreement), and customers can order the book from them too.

The infamous “Vapor-ware” product The Cult of Transcendence will be included in Delta Green: Targets of Opportunity.

Six months later, Pagan Publishing will produce a mass market trade paperback of Delta Green: Targets of Opportunity which will be available to distributors and via brick & mortar game stores. Since Delta Green:Targets of Opportunity is likely to be released just before GenCon in August 2009, it is likely that our mass-market edition will be our first product of 2010.

Speaking of 2010, look for Horrors of War, will be Pagan Publishing’s flagship book in our Horrors of War series. While future publications will concentrate on Call of Cthulhu scenarios set against the backdrop of wars from across time and around the globe, our first Horrors of War is a sourcebook and scenario anthology set during the Great War (1914-1918). Biplanes and Byahkee! If you want a preview of what these scenarios are going to be like, check out this recording that was made at GenCon 2008 when I play-tested “Dig for Victory” on a group of unsuspecting victims.

There is a small chance that we will publish “The Last Flight of the L58,” as a stand alone scenario. Set aboard a WWI German zeppelin on a long-range mission to Asia, I play tested this for the first time at GenCon 2007, and three times subsequently. It’s ready to go, with some editing, so we may remove it from the scenarios in Horrors of War (which is currently bursting at the seams with nine scenarios) and try and get it out in 2009 just to whet your appetites.

Other items to look for in 2010 will be the long awaited Post 9/11 update for the Delta Green campaign setting. Yes, we are working on it. More news to follow.

There are a couple of big changes… obviously we’ve changed the look and feel of the site quite a bit, but that’s just the start. All the design, shopping for service providers, and heavy lifting that went into this site relaunch was done by my ever-lovely partner in crime, the completely feral Jane Brooks.

We’ve completed and playtested all six scenarios and now the sourcebook is being written by Mike Vorhola with some additional material by John H. Crowe.

We’ll be working on some cover art for advertizing purposes before the end of the year, and when our fourth book for 2008 (Bumps in the Night) is done being laid out, we’ll get to work getting the interior art and layout done. We might be able to get on top of that before the holiday season.

Mansions of Madness

Auch Chaosium lässt sich diesen Monat nicht lumpen und bringt eine Abenteuersammlung mit dem Titel Mansions of Madness heraus. Kommt euch bekannt vor? Stimmt auch, es handelt sich hierbei um einen Nachdruck, allerdings wird ein zusätzliches Abenteuer enthalten sein mit dem Titel “The Old Damned House“, geschrieben von Penelope Love und Liam Routt. Die anderen Abenteuer wie „Mr. Corbitt“ oder „Crack’d and Crook’d Manse“ wurden bereits von Pegasus übersetzt und in dem Band Kinder des Käfers veröffentlicht.

MANSIONS OF MADNESS is a collection of six independent tales for Call of Cthulhu. Set in the 1920s and of varying length and complexity, these adventures can be planted into an ongoing campaign as the keeper sees fit. Some can be played in a single night, others will require several evenings to complete. They can readily be used as plot twists, interesting diversions, or red herrings.

The King in Yellow Expansion

Auch die Kartenerweiterung für das populäre Arkham Horror Brettspiel aus dem Hause Fantasy Flight Games ist mittlerweile auf Englisch erschienen. Was das Zusatzpack beinhaltet?

Auch das deutsche Cthulhu Now ist von diesem Setting neben dem namensgleichen englischsprachigen Setting stark beeinflußt.

Hier sind wir bereits auf Delta Green eingegangen.

Kürzlich ging bei Ebay der Kampagnenband Walker of the Wastes (WotW) für stattliche 208,03 € über den virtuellen Ladentisch. Grund genug sich den „Schatz“ aus dem Jahre 1994 einmal genauer anzuschauen. WotW stammt aus dem Hause Pagan Publishing, die vielen wohl als Erfinder von Delta Green bekannt sein dürften. Die Kampagne ist in den 1920er Jahren angesiedelt, 224 Seiten stark und von John H. Crowe III geschrieben worden, auf den auch Szenarien zurückgehen wie Realm of Shadows und Coming Full Circle. Zusätzlich zu dieser Kampagne gibt es noch ein äußert seltenes Player Aid Kit auf das aber nicht weiter eingegangen wird. Die gesamte Kampagne ist auf englisch geschrieben und wurde bisher nicht ins Deutsche übertragen. Masks of Nyarlathotep (auf deutsch erschienen als Im Schatten Nyarlathoteps), war für WotW ein wichtiges Vorbild, denn auch hier dreht sich alles um eine Gottheit des Mythos (in diesem Falle der Windschreiter – Ithaqua) und ihren abscheulichen Kult, der sich global ausgebreitet hat. Dementsprechend führen die Reisen der Spielercharaktere auch unter anderem vom eisigen Kanada in den wüstenheißen Irak. Der Plot ist recht klassisch und wird in der Einleitung des Buches beschrieben: Die Spielercharaktere müssen verhindern, dass der Kult Ithaquas ihren Meister aus dem frostigen Gefängnis befreien in welches er von den Älteren Göttern gesperrt wurde. Dies schwächte seinen loyalen Kult stark und heute, in den 1920ern versucht nun der Rest des Kultes, durch die mystischen Tafeln des Schicksals aus dem alten Babylonien, den Windschreiter aus dem Gefängnis zu befreien, welches Ithaquas Macht auf magischem Wege in Zaum hält. Der Ithaqua-Mythos stammt im Übrigen nicht aus der Feder von Lovecraft, sondern wurde von August Derleth erfunden und von Brian Lumley weitergesponnen.

WotW startet mit einer arktischen Expedition, die sich auf den Spuren der Franklin Exedition bewegt. Sir John Franklin war ein britischer Polarforscher dessen Expedition ein katastrophales Ende fand und deren Überlebenden nie gefunden wurden. Im Szenario selbst gehört man also einer Expedition an (was ein Problem bei der Charaktererschaffung darstellen kann) und untersucht Flora, Fauna und die Menschen die sich in dieser harschen Gegend niedergelassen haben. Im Verlaufe des Szenarios kommt es zu einem Kampf gegen einen Innuit Kult, der für unerfahrene Spielercharaktere recht schnell tödlich enden könnte, wenn der Spielleiter nicht mindernd eingreift. Trotz der Schwierigkeit ist dieses Szenario sehr atmosphärisch und mit guten historischen Informationen aufbereitet. Ein exzellenter Start in die Kälte und das beste Szenario der Kampagne!
Die darauf folgenden Szenarios in der Mitte der Kampagne drehen sich um den Ithaqua Kult und seine schändlichen, globalen Aktivitäten. Ähnlich den Masks of Nyarlathotep, reist die Spielgruppe hier durch fremde und nicht ganz so fremde Länder und Kulturen. Hier schwächt die Kampagne etwas ab und kann den exzellenten Einstieg nicht halten. Es werden in diesem Teil auch red herrings (also falsche Fährten) für den Spielleiter angeboten, um so der Kampagne weitere Tiefe zu verleihen (was die Spielzeit aber gewaltig erhöhen dürfte, die bereits jetzt schon äußerst üppig ausfällt).
WotW findet sein Ende dann aber wieder in einem gelungenen Abschluss, der über den Mittelteil hinwegtröstet. Auch hier wird klassisches geboten (vielleicht für den deutschen Markt schon zu klassisch): Der Kampf der Spielercharaktere gegen einen Kult, der verzweifelt versucht das Ende der Welt herbeizuführen. Sollte es den Charakteren tatsächlich gelingen die frostigen Gefahren zu meistern, so werden sie nicht nur mit dem Wissen belohnt die Welt gerettet zu haben, nein sie erhalten auch eines der mächtigsten Mythos-Artefakte überhaupt! Was es damit auf sich hat, wird aber wohl jeder selbst herausfinden müssen, insofern er Ithaqua und seine Schergen überwinden kann.

Optisch gesehen macht das Buch einiges her, auch wenn im inneren die sehr guten Illustrationen eher spärlich eingesetzt werden. Die Karten sind sehr gut, das Cover spricht für sich und im Anhang findet sich ein Kalender für die Jahre 1928 – 1932 und natürlich, die für Cthulhu so wichtigen Handouts.

Abschließend bleibt zu sagen, WotW ist eine sehr gute Kampagne (mit einem schwächeren Mittelteil) aus dem Hause Pagan Publishing. Einzig ein Mythos-Dilemma könnte für den einen oder anderen Spielleiter schwierig sein, je nachdem wie man zu August Derleth und seinen Älteren Göttern steht, die sich um die Belange der Menschen kümmern. Auch der Schwierigkeitsgrad für die Spieler mag abschrecken, aber hier zeigte schon Horror im Orient-Express wie damit umzugehen ist (Lasst die Spielercharaktere an Freunde schreiben!). Doch auch der Spielleiter sollte sich Zeit nehmen bevor er die Kampagne präsentiert, es gibt viel zu lesen und es gibt noch mehr Optionen für die Spieler. Bleibt nur noch eines zu sagen: Mit ihrem frostigem Setting bleibt die Kampagne aus dem Jahre 1994 immer noch ein erstklassiger Gänsehautbringer.
